In my opinion, I think Macbeth wasn't one, sure he went a little nuts when he murdered Banquo and his son (who got away) but after that murder, his guilt got the better of him because he kept seeing the ghost of his friend at the banquet table when nobody else could. And you're right, he didn't want to kill the King but I don't think he really felt remorse after his wife committed suicide.
