My speakers don't work and I only bought them today?

I had some speakers before but they were old and I thought they had died but the brand new speakers don't work either. Could there be something wrong with my computer settings that are making it soundless? They're Advent 2.1 PC speakers and my computer is a desktop with windows xp. Cheers
